Cervical Cancer Screening

Our Arizona women’s specialists preform a thorough well-women exam to look for any possible indicators of cervical cancer, using the Pap smear test. This exam will be completed during your annual well women health check appointment.

A cervical cancer screening is recommended for women between the ages of 21-65.

Using the Pap smear test, cervical cells are gently scraped from the inside of the cervix to then be examined under the microscope to observe any changes in the cells or cell abnormalities.

For early detection or concern of cervical cancer, here is a list of possible symptoms that, if you are experiencing, should consult with your gynecologist:

  • Spotting or light bleeding in between periods
  • A heavier menstrual cycle than what you are used to that last longer than normal
  • Bleeding after penetration of the vagina
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • A persistent pain in the back or pelvic area without cause

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Screening

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. Many men who have HPV do not know that they have it thus transferring it to the partners they are sexual with. Often there are no symptoms of HPV and the body can typically ward off this infection naturally within two years.

The only way to detect HPV is through the HPV screening test completed with a Pap test to examine these specific cells. If the body is unable to fight the infection, HPV can mutate the cells in the vagina and turn cancerous.

If you are sexually active and have never been tested for HPV, make sure to discuss this screening with your North Valley Women’s Care OBGYN Phoenix to ensure adequate care.

What to Expect at a Well Women Health Check Appointment

A well women health check appointment is a yearly exam that is recommended by your gynecologist to properly monitor any changes with your reproductive health. It also helps to stay up to date on vaccinations and other testing as needed.

Well woman visits are important for your overall reproductive health. It’s a perfect time to discuss birth control, STD testing, the HPV vaccination, breast exams, and so forth. If searching for a gynecologist near me, call North Valley Women’s Care for your comprehensive women’s medical care services, where every need is addressed and assessed…

Addressing and Assessing All of Your Needs, Concerns and Questions

North Valley Women’s Care specializes in treating a wide range of matters that may arise which involve the woman’s reproductive system. These include pregnancy and childbirth, menstruation and menopause, fertility issues, sexually transmitted infections, hormone imbalances or disorders, and other areas.

Patients can expect a thorough exam upon their first visit which will include an assessment of the patient’s current health and a healthy history, plus any areas that may be risk factors for other gynecological concerns.

What else you can expect during your first visit and follow up visits with your Glendale OBGYN:

A general physical exam will document your height, weight, and blood pressure will be checked as well as an assessment with any existing health issues you are experiencing

An external genital exam includes a look on the outside area of the vagina to ensure no infections or anything out of the ordinary

A pelvic exam and a Pap smear are necessary to ensure that all internal organs feel as they should and that the cells from the inside of the vagina, the cervix to be exact, are healthy. This exam is quick and usually painless, though a little pressure and discomfort may be experienced.

In the exam it is important to discuss any concerns or questions about your menstrual period, your sexual activity and birth control, any pain or discomfort you are feeling in the reproductive system area, pregnancy or plans to become pregnant, symptoms of menopause, concerns with hormones, and any risk factors your primary care or specialist may have discussed with you.

A breast exam is used for the detection of any unusual lumps in the breast tissue. This is a quick exam done by your OBGYN as part of your visit. It is similar to a self-breast exam except done by the trained professional OBGYN who may notice an area of concern that could easily be overlooked by the patient.
