The Relief You Need Through the Body’s Changes

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a method to often help those experiencing uncomfortable and unmanageable symptoms of menopause. Women may experience the disturbing and frustrating symptoms such as hot flashes, sweating, trouble sleeping, urinary tract infections, emotional changes, and more. The changes experienced at this time in a woman’s life can be more disruptive to some women than others.

HRT offers relief in these areas by providing hormones that the body is no longer making enough of on its own. Your gynecologist will help to regulate which hormones your body is in need of to help to counterbalance the symptoms. Your preferred Glendale OBGYN at North Valley Women’s Care are Arizona women’s specialists who are experienced in hormone management to help ease you into the better years of life.

The Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy

There are two different types of HRT treatments, each with their own benefits according to the patient’s specific needs.

The Systemic Hormone Therapy approach is the most beneficial for the more common and life-disrupting symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal discomfort. The combination of the two main reproductive hormones that the body is missing are provided in this therapy, estrogen and progesterone. Increasing these hormones may also reduce the risk of colon cancer, osteoporosis, and other diseases associated with the lack of these hormones.

Systemic Hormone Therapy comes in a pill form, a cream or gel, a spray or a patch applied to the skin.

Another option is the Low-dose Vaginal method. This method is usually an application of estrogen to help with vaginal dryness and urinary incontinence. This can be applied with a cream, a tablet or a ring.

For women who entered into menopause before the age of 45, there are benefits to taking estrogen supplementation to help decrease the risk of:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart disease
  • Premature death
  • Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
  • Anxiety and depression

What are the Risks of Hormone Replacement Therapy?

There are risks that come with Hormone Replacement Therapy, though studies have suggested that women who start on HRT within 10 years of entering menopause or are younger than 60 have decreased risks than those who start HRT after 10 or 20 years and are 60 years and older.

HRT may increase the risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Blood clots
  • Breast cancer

For more information on the risks involved and to see if HRT is right for you, schedule an appointment with one of our women specialists who can answer all of your questions. She will also do a complete health history and health exam and screening with you to ensure that HRT is safe for you.

Many women opt to partake in HRT despite elevated risks, especially those who experienced moderate to severe hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms, loss of bone mass, stopped menstruating or experienced a loss of function in their ovaries before age 40.
