OBGYN Stands for Obstetrics Gynecologist
An OBGYN thus specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology. An Obstetrician is a physician who delivers babies and works with women before, during and after pregnancy. A Gynecologist is a physician who treats the health of the female reproductive organs. As a doctor within this specialty, an OBGYN also manages and performs medical and surgical care for the patient.
Obstetrics –
A branch of medicine that specializes in treating women during pregnancy to ensure the health of the mother and the baby. The size of the uterus is determined to ensure its ability to support the growing fetus and to estimate the length of the pregnancy. Through ultrasound imaging, the baby’s development is monitored for any abnormalities which may need intervention.
Gynecologists also investigate reasons as to why a woman is unable to get pregnant. The Gyn Physician will perform tests and procedures to decipher if fallopian tubes may be blocked or if there is a hormonal imbalance that will need treatment to regulate.
Gynecology has progressed from not only working within the body but also making it possible to get pregnant through a process outside the body. An OB Gyn MD can assist a woman in getting pregnant by taking her eggs and fertilizing them outside of her body, in a dish, and then implanting them into the uterus, also known as in vitro fertilization.
Some OBGYN can also serve as the primary care doctor for their patients as well as provide comprehensive clinical care with a team of physicians who are working with the patient.
How a Professional Receives the OBGYN Credentialing
After completing an undergraduate program of four years, typically with a degree in science, the aspiring OBGYN must attend medical school for four years. The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology requires that a professional completes a four-year residency program after graduating from medical school, before sitting for the certification examination to complete the Obstetrics and Gynecology schooling requirements.
